GIRONA, SPAIN
Europe’s new cycling mecca
You just have to look at popular cycling Instagram feeds to know that Girona in Spain is fast becoming the European Mecca for all things cycling.
With a population of just 100,000, Girona has a highly disproportionate number of pro and ex-pro residents (rumours suggest 100 call Girona home); including Christian Meier who has established the iconic The Service Coursebike store and La Fabrica Girona cafe - also our top pick for the best coffee and views in town. Although another coffee contender is Federal Cafe owned by UAE-Team Emirates, Rory Sutherland.
The pros come for the riding - just 15 minutes and you're out on stunning training roads, whether you're looking for country lanes, gentle undulations or pinchy climbs - but they stay for the lifestyle.
The city is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, and a delight of cobbled streets, ancient steps and charming buildings. The food (and wine) with it's Spanish and Catalan influences is fabulous, and even better when you're sitting at a quaint tapas bar, in a small laneway on a balmy July evening. It has one of the world's most dynamic (bike-friendly) cafe cultures, good enough to rival Melbourne, Australia and it offers a host of cultural activities to occupy you; whether you want to walk atop the city wall, visit the Arabic Baths or take the short trip to Salvador Dali's home town. Plus, Barcelona is just 40 minutes away by train.
And if that isn't enough to entice you, the weather is temperate, and rarely rains.
You can see why it wasn't a difficult decision for us to run our first ever Girona Physio Bike Fit course July this year. Comejoin us and discover why the Girona hype is well deserved.
